Your mindset is an important piece of your personal development. It’s your mental attitude that shapes everything you do. To become who you were made to be, you must nurture a positive mindset.
What is mindset?
Everyone has their own mindset. It’s essentially made up of the thought patterns and programming in your brain.
When you are young, your mindset is often shaped how you are raised. If there is a lot of encouragement in your household, you tend to have a growth mindset. If there is discouragement, you tend to have a fixed mindset.
A growth mindset is when a person believes their abilities can grow and be strengthened. A fixed mindset is when one believes their abilities are fixed and can’t change. Keep an eye out for a post on growth and fixed mindsets later this week!
Your mindset dictates how your life will play out. This is why it’s an important piece of your personal development.
How your mindset works
Once something is in your subconscious, your mind will guide you in that direction. Our thoughts our in our subconscious before they we are conscious of them.
A lot of our subconscious exists because our brain is a record of the past. We think and make decisions based on what’s happened to us in the past.
Knowing this, we start each day in the past. We wake up, reflect on what we need to do for the day, based on the day before and sometimes even review our problems.
We’re constantly sending our subconscious thoughts and feelings based on past circumstances. Our mindset is then continually shaped by where our thoughts go.
Overcome previous mindset programming that prevents you from reaching your destination
Whether you deem something right or wrong, if you believe it, it’s true. As humans we evolve our thoughts, patterns and behaviors over time. We discover we may actually feel very different about something we previously believed.
In my personal experience, I got caught up in the scripted life. I believed I had to live how society told me to live.
I chased money, houses, cars, big jobs, you name it. As I earned these things, I grew insanely frustrated over time but had no idea why I felt so unfulfilled.
My mindset was telling me I had to live a certain way that society expected me to. I convinced myself I couldn’t do anything else because it wasn’t possible.
I believed the life I actually wanted to live wasn’t possible.
I struggled with self doubt and hid my true passions from everyone.
I received promotion after promotion at work and was congratulated each time. Because of these congratulations, I felt I was doing something right and had to keep going.
I didn’t know it at the time but I was unhappy, unfulfilled and stuck because of a fixed mindset. It was a result of my own invisible subconscious behavior.
What separates the subconscious from the conscious mind?
Our mind works in a few ways; we have a subconscious, conscious and analytical mind.
In my experience, I was making decisions based on information I was directly feeding my subconscious. I did this without even realizing it.
I did this by spending a ton of time in the conscious and analytical mindset. I entered the analytical mind to make decisions.
The problem is, the analytical mind is fixed based on what our conscious beliefs are. You have to get past the analytical mind to change your mindset.
This is why things like meditation are important. Meditation slows your brain waves down to process thoughts. This allows you to enter your subconscious and rewire your thoughts.
Your mindset directly impacts your reality. If you believe you aren’t capable of doing something, it won’t happen. If you believe you are capable, you can achieve anything and you will find a way.
If you find yourself in a fixed mindset, I challenge you not to wait for tragedy or crisis to repair your mind. Unfortunately it sometimes takes a crisis to repair.
The decisions you make today, based on your thoughts, are how your life will play out tomorrow. Are you in a growth or fixed mindset?
