What Your Energy Says About You and How to Use it to Your Benefit
Are you aware of your energy? You may feel like you have good awareness but what about daily? Here’s what your energy says about you and how to use it to your benefit.
Reading energy
Think about the last time someone walked into a room you were in. This could have been awhile since we’re in the middle of a pandemic but it could be a virtual setting or at home as well.
It’s in our human nature to read someone when they walk into a room. Whether we’re consciously doing it or not. This could be at home with loved ones, at work in a performance review or in public with random strangers.
I remember trying to read my parents’ energy as a kid. Especially if I knew I did something that would get me in trouble.
Whether we realize it or not, our first instinct is to read people. Our brains are wired to constantly consume and assess information. This is also true for inputs we receive.
What your energy says about you
It’s our human nature to read other’s energy, but we don’t always realize how our own energy impacts others.
Think about the last time you walked (or video’d) into a room of people. Were you excited to be there? Were you alert and aware of your surroundings? Did you read negative energy and immediately lower yours? (Sigh.)
More often than not, we receive the energy we put out into the world. If you’re negative in nature, you will receive negative energy back. If you’re a positive person, you’ll attract positive energy.
Your energy sets your intention for the day. Are you being purposeful? Are you taking time to yourself each day to self reflect?
It’s easy to get caught up in the day to day motions and not realize how this affects our energy. If we’re not careful, we can trend on the negative side and attract negativity.
Creating time and space for yourself each day to focus is crucial for our energy. We must nurture our minds with kindness, compassion and respect.
My personal experience
I’ve been in many situations where I let the energy of a room bring mine down. At the time, I had no idea why I felt down. I just knew I was taming myself down several levels to match the room.
It felt inauthentic and required a version of myself I didn’t feel comfortable with.
While this may be important depending on the situation you’re in, it’s not a permanent way to live or work.
When I had a breakthrough and realized I was living someone else’s life, I knew it was time for a change. I realized I spent years lowering my energy for the sake of others. I did this because I surrounded myself with environments that weren’t condusive to who I was made to be.
I felt like a stranger in my own body.
Never permanently dull yourself for the sake of others. Alternatively, never over extend your energy for the sake of others if it’s not authentic. If you find you’re doing this on a regular basis, you’re in the wrong company.
How to use your energy to your benefit
Understanding your energy is the first step in using it to your benefit. This includes understanding your emotions and tapping into them. If you can do this, you can master and show up well to any situation.
Your energy is first affected by your thoughts. From there, feelings, words, and actions come into play. You are either gaining energy or depleting it. You are doing this based on the combination of these thoughts and behaviors.
You have the power to create and harness your own energy.
Here are a few tools to use your energy to your benefit:
1. Set aside 10 minutes (at a minimum) each morning to focus on your intentions for the day.
- How do you want to show up for yourself?
- How do you want to show up for others?
- Do the answers to these questions match?
2. Allow at least 30 minutes a day to create
Block off 30 minutes a day to let your creative side run wild.
- This is for creating anything you want: Color, design, build, etc
- What patterns do you notice?
- Are your behaviors aligned with your daily activities? If not, time to reassess why
3. Do something kind for someone else
Choose kindness every time!
- This doesn’t have to be a grand gesture. Do something small for someone else
- When we do something kind for someone else it releases endorphins and boosts serotonin.
Summary
Your energy sets the tone for everything else in your life. It guides and drives you.
