Lacking motivation happens to all of us. Especially when we’re out of our routines and at home more often. But I’m going to help you change that. Here’s what to do when you don’t feel like doing anything.
Take a break for a reset when you’re lacking motivation
First thing’s first. If you’re anything like me and you’re feeling a lack of motivation, your body is trying to tell you something.
When you don’t feel like doing anything it’s time to take a break. Pausing for a reset is crucial to refuel our mind, body and soul.
Living in go mode all the time can cause many dangerous side effects we may not even realize until it’s too late.
If we don’t take a break, here’s what can happen:
- Productivity levels go down
- Focus and attention to detail are far less
- Judgement becomes cloudy
- Exhaustion sets in
The list goes on and on but the point is clear. When you’re at a point where you don’t feel like doing anything, it’s time for a break!
Change your environment
Something as small as changing your environment can provide motivation instantly.
If you’ve heard of the Enneagram, I’m a 7 (The Enthusiast.) This means I have a constant desire for adventure and changing things up! I often change my environment when I work.
I get bored so easily in one place. My brain needs creative fuel to carry me through the work day.
Working remote has a ton of perks and this is one of my top favorites. I switch from my office, to kitchen table, to creative room in my basement. I love the change up!
Here are a few ways to change your environment to boost motivation:
- Take your work outside, weather permitting
- If you work remotely, change rooms in your home
- Work from a coffee shop instead of the office
- If you have to go into the office, work in a conference room or the cafeteria
- Find a co-working space you can work from (I did this for awhile and loved the creative entrepreneurs I worked around!)
Put on a fun and upbeat playlist
Sometimes, you just have to push yourself and go for it when you don’t feel like doing anything. Music is good for the soul and while I rarely work without it, I need to switch it up at times.
My favorite stations to listen to while I work are Meditation Station on Amazon Music and Relaxation Radio on Pandora. They are both so calming and provide nice background music while I work. They certainly keep me calm throughout the day.
But, when I’m needing to kick motivation into high gear, I find an upbeat and fun station or playlist to put on while I work.
Some of my favorites are Rap BBQ Radio and The Turn Up Radio on Pandora. They both have amazing beats and turn my work day around when I’m not sure what else to do.
I also use these stations when I’m working out or getting ready for the day. They are a great way to pump me up and motivate me!
Rap may not be your thing but my point here is to play whatever upbeat music you’re into to get the energy going!
Summary – lacking motivation is temporary
