What are Affirmations and How to Use Them in Your Life
Recently I’ve been reading, researching and studying affirmations. If you’re like me, you’ve probably believed at one point that affirmations are full of fluff. The more time I spent researching them, the more I realized two things: 1) I had been using affirmations my whole life 2) I need to be more purposeful and really embrace affirmations going forward. So, let’s talk about what affirmations are and how you can use them in your life.
What are affirmations?
Well, the dictionary definition is this: the act of affirming, or something affirmed : a positive assertion. Helpful? Not much. Let’s dig deeper…
You’ve heard of your subconscious, right? Affirmations work in a way that directly speak to your subconscious. They are goals and dreams you have, that you speak of as if you’ve already accomplished them.
How do they work?
Affirmations work hand in hand with your subconscious in ways that affect your behavior and habits. They create mental images without us realizing it. By creating these images, you see yourself achieving your dreams and goals and it inspires and motivates you to work harder at those goals!
Eventually, they will change your thinking patterns too. The subconscious is a powerful thing to tap into, if you can really focus!
How to implement affirmations into your life
All of this sounds good, right? Let’s get down to business then! Start out by brainstorming and writing down your goals and dreams. They can big as big as you want them too! Remember, if you can dream it, you can do it. I suggest creating a vision board like I did!
Once you have a clear list of your goals and dreams, set aside time each day to say these things aloud as if you have already accomplished them. Make sure it’s a time when you can really focus on your thoughts and be present in the moment.
For instance: if you’re goal is to travel to Italy, say this to yourself: “I had the best time exploring Italy and taking in the incredible views, food and culture.” Doesn’t that feel good? Now, repeat this at least daily, if not as many times as you’d like during the day!
