Each day we are distracted with some force of nature that allows us to feel out of control. Some days are worse than others. Given the chaos of the coronavirus and the less than stable market, I felt it was appropriate to share how to stay calm when everything around you feels out of control. I’ll share five things I am currently doing to stay and remain calm.
Ensure you’re household is equipped
While I’m going to share many ways to soothe and calm yourself, one of the first things you can do for not only you, but your whole household, is to ensure you are equipped.
At our home, we are not overly paranoid about the conditions around us, as that does not allow for any peace in the moment. However, we do believe in being proactive and not reactive, given the current relevant situation like coronavirus.
Whether it’s coronavirus, or something else, the best thing you can do is to be educated and proactive about the situation. This does mean checking the news every five minutes for a new update and panicking, while doing nothing about it.
It means, staying up to date with credible news sources and the authorities in the given situation to remain educated to make purposeful decisions.
Here is a breakdown of generic things you can do to stay calm and help you with a plan of attack in any situation that requires you to be equipped when an unpredictable situation presents itself:
- Educate yourself on the situation through credible sources only
- Set a reoccurring time/schedule for you will remain educated by this/these sources
- Upon understanding the situation, evaluate what credible sources are advising you to do
- Evaluate what the next period of time will look like during the situation
- Where will you physically have to be?
- What will you need?
- Upon understanding where you will need to physically be, make a list of everything you will need to get you through this period
- Proactively purchase (or order online for delivery) the items you will need
- Think food, office supplies, kid activities, toiletries, etc
- Store these items in a place where you won’t touch them until they become necessary to endure the period throughout the situation
Meditate
Meditation is a great practice, no matter what you’re going through, but it can be especially helpful during periods of uncertainty.
If you’ve never meditated, use an app like Insight Timer to guide you through.
Go to a quiet place where you can put some headphones on and close your eyes. Make sure to set aside at least 20 minutes so you can experiment with different guided meditations if you’re new to this.
It will take some time to get used to but stick with it. You will find meditations that bring you peace and level set your mind for the day.
Through Insight Timer you can choose guided meditations, meditations with or without background music, whether it’s a female or male voice and filter by benefit. The options are endless and the app offers over 30,000 meditations!
Drink water to stay calm
Hydrate, hydrate, hydrate! This is also something you should be doing on a regular basis. Drinking water from the time you wake up to the time you go to bed will add a great deal of benefits to your life.
Not only is it insanely good for your skin, but it’s incredible for your energy and ability to think clearly.
Our brains need water to function properly, especially after sleeping and going without hydration for several hours on end.
If you’re not a fan on plain water, add lemon juice or use an additive flavor option you can purchase at the store, just make sure it is free from caffeine and artificial sweeteners.
Journal to stay calm
Do you ever feel like you have a million thoughts racing through your head, which in turn, is causing you to NOT stay calm?
Journaling is an incredible way to let your thoughts out and clear your mind.
Most people think they have to specific topic to journal on and stay within those guidelines. Untrue!
The purpose of journaling is to release your thoughts so you can create space to think purposefully. It’s very therapeutic and you might like it so much you stick to it on a regular basis!
Keep your journal with you in your purse, workbag or diaper bag to let your thoughts out whenever you feel the urge.
Read to stay calm
Reading is one of my absolute favorite things to do. It’s another great way to calm your mind and get rid of racing thoughts.
It allows us to step into someone else’s world and forget about what’s going on in our lives – or realize what we have going on isn’t that bad.
I read a physical multiple times a day to help me stay calm and it’s a great way to stay learn new things.
Whether you’re reading a physical book, digital copy or listening to audible, it will without a doubt, be a great distraction that will help keep you sharp in the meantime.
