Getting organized looks a lot different for everyone, depending on who you are. Staying organized is another thing! The first step in accomplishing your goals and dreams is to get organized. I’m going to give you tactical steps to get organized and accomplish your goals this week. This will even work beyond one week!
Create checklists to get yourself organized
I live by this one daily. Start each day by writing down a list of everything you need to get done that day. I recommend buying a notebook or planner that’s visually appealing and functional for your liking. You’ll be more inclined to develop this habit on a daily basis. If you leave your house for work, take your planner or notebook with you.
I have a smaller Boss Gal notebook that I used to create my to do lists on a new, fresh page, everyday. I date the top of the page and then make bullet point lists. As I go throughout the day, I check off each item upon completion. There is a direct psychological tie between writing tasks down and checking them off your list as you go. It keeps you motivated and more importantly, shows your accomplishments. I create checklists to keep me organized for everything I do!
Be clear and specific on your goals
This applies to something as simple as to do lists, as well as, something as grand as a life plan. Often times you’ll hear someone say “I want to make $X,” but what they really want is to make $X to be able to travel to Hawaii, etc. Or they’ll say that, when the goal is really to buy a certain car, or type of house.
It’s ok to start broad when it comes to your goals, but focus hard on narrowing those goals down to something more specific. This will help keep you organized and on track to achieving those goals.
From the time I was a little girl, it’s been my dream to own my own company. Guess what? I achieved that almost five years ago, and when it happened, I felt confused why it didn’t feel like I had imagined. The problem? I wasn’t specific enough with my goal. I had to ask myself the following questions to gain clarity?
- What type of company did I want to own? Niche, etc
- What is my target audience?
- What is the purpose of my company?
- What goals do I want to set for my company each year?
- How much revenue do I want to create on a yearly basis so I’ll know how to scale?
Asking yourself specific questions will help keep you much more organized and also bring clarity and peace.
Schedule your week to stay organized
Now that you have your to do list, schedule it! Part of staying organized is creating a schedule and sticking to it. Choose the calendar tool you’re most familiar with, or like the best, and create blocks on your schedule to get work done.
It’s important to understand which times of day will aid in your productivity. If you function best early morning, schedule your hardest tasks during that time. If you’re a late nighter, schedule that time!
I work in surges throughout the day, so I schedule blocks from the time I wake up, to the time I go to bed to get stuff done. I find it easier to take breaks in between each task so I can reset.
Create the right environment
Not only is time of day important, but also your environment. In general, this is an easy thing for people to miss. Whether you realize it or not, you have a preferred work environment. If you feel inspired and creative working from a coffee shop, schedule time at your favorite one.
I prefer my home office, couch, coffee shop or a park. I need a space that allows me to stretch, stand up, walk around and feel the creative juices as I work!
