Have a dream but not sure where to start building? If you’re lucky enough to know what you want to do in life, congrats! You’re already further than most. Here’s where to start building your dream into a reality.
First thing you need to know – many believe you have to have a detailed plan of exactly what you want to do and then strategically go for it. You know, those five years plans that you get asked about in interviews?
While it’s a good idea to have a plan, t’s not realistic to have every detail laid out for the next five years in today’s world. Technology changes so much of our environment at a rapid pace we must be flexible in our approach to building our dream.
Just start building your dream
Don’t let the pressure of an idea force you into agonizing over details. JUST START!
When I started blogging five years ago, I remember how awkward, exciting and silly I felt publishing to the world that I had a blog.
You know what? I was right. Feeling awkward over a passion is awkward in itself and I had to throw that ish right out the door immediately. I was right in feeling silly, silly to think this couldn’t turn into something greater with a little hard work and dedication. Finally, I was right to feel excited – BECAUSE WHY WOULDN’T YOU BE EXCITED ABOUT YOUR PASSION?!
Take your dream to social media
So what does that mean? As with everything you can find some line of commonality no matter what it is you’re interested in. Start at the basic level with something you do daily.
On social media? Start following accounts your passion is related to if you’re not already. Create a separate Instagram account that only follows people that already work in your line of passion.
Join a Facebook group that is dedicated to your passion, you can sit and watch from the sidelines if you don’t want to be an active participant but you will without a doubt learn something new even by watching.
Pinterest is another great resource for building your dream. It is one of my favorite social media platforms. The wealth of knowledge is endless there.
Chances are you’re already on your phone, take advantage of that screen time and create purpose for your passion!
Research your dream
Got a passion for reading as well? Put that to good use.
I realize not many people head to the local library anymore when there are ebooks and audio books but I enjoy being in the atmosphere and getting lost in the pages researching the best books for my passion. Free education!
If you’re not into the library scene, find an audio book on Audible related to building your dream. I’m constantly reading not only to learn more, but also to fuel my inspiration and energy for my dream.
When I find a book I like, I then research the author to see if they have a blog or social media accounts I can follow to continue learning. There is no shortage of info out there when it comes to building your dream.
Meet people
One of the best methods to feeding your passion is just getting out and talking to people in the same industry. Some will fall in your lap and others you will seek out.
Sometimes being in the right place at the right time can trigger the start to building your dream. You never know who will either be, or connect you to the person who will further your dreams.
Start by reaching out to people in the industry you want to be in. Not everyone you reach out to will respond and that’s ok. You’re still doing something and those that do respond will fuel your fire more than if you hadn’t.
I’ve never met with a fellow peer in the industry that didn’t lead to other relationships or opportunities from the initial contact. Once you do this, you will start to see a spiral effect in a good way and your passion will start to take shape!
Summary
Remember, everyone starts somewhere whether it is with a simple idea or sea of ideas, but everyone begins in the same place – by doing something. So, not to be like Nike – but just do it! And don’t give up after a few failed attempts. You will learn from everything you do.
