If this year has found you lost more than ever, you’re not alone. It’s easy to get lost with so much noise surrounding us at all times. There are endless ways to get caught up in the noise from media outlets to health issues around the global pandemic. Here’s how to get lost in your own wonderland to find yourself.
What is wonderland?
You may be wondering what wonderland really is. There’s a good chance Alice in Wonderland comes to mind when you see the word.
It’s a good start. I’ve always been drawn to Alice, the Mad Hatter and that little white rabbit.
Wonderland is where we go to get away from the world and find ourselves. It is the very essence of your mind, body and soul.
It’s the deep thoughts that sit inside of you that I like to call whispers, hence the name Whispering in Wonderland.
Your own wonderland is a magical place where only you hold the keys. It’s a place where every thought that enters your mind exists.
It’s your safe space. It has all the answers to everything you’ve ever wanted and looked for.
You are wonderland and wonderland is you.
I had to get lost in wonderland to find myself
I spent years searching for my why. It was full of painful/frustrating moments, false aha! moments and lots of money down the drain.
I spent so much time looking to everyone and everything else for the answers. I fully believed an external factor would tell me who I was meant to be.
I was beyond frustrated after so much time caught up in other people’s stories that I wasn’t listening to my own whispers inside.
I tried so many different things from jobs to hobbies. I felt frustrated that no one else could understand me. I spent a lot of time blaming external factors for why I wasn’t where I wanted to be in life.
The internet was a great black hole to distract me as well. Talk about getting caught in the research trap. The constant rotation of new internet jobs and social media led me to years of trying to find my why.
I’m a millennial so by nature of my generation there’s always some new shiny object on the World Wide Web. Talk about distractions.
The truth is, I had the answers within me all along.
The answers existed within my own wonderland, not in everyone else’s and certainly not on the internet.
I had no idea I was lost in the sea of research and consumerism until I stepped away from it all.
The funny thing is, I had whispers all along that I kept subconsciously pushing down. When I felt something creep up, I would convince myself it wasn’t who I was made to be.
We must be careful of the story we tell ourselves.
I reflect back now and realize those whispers are the very reason I do what I am called to do in helping others break down barriers and get unstuck. It’s not a fun place to be and can feel so lonely at times.
So, how can you get lost in your own wonderland to find yourself?
When we strip away the noise and dedicate time to ourselves, things become more clear. Often times we don’t even realize we’re caught up in so much noise.
Staying home as a result of the pandemic has certainly taught me some things about myself. There are behaviors and patterns I don’t ever plan on returning to because of the unnecessary noise they created in my life.
To get lost in your own wonderland do these things:
- Spend 20 minutes a day in a quiet place by yourself. Leave your phone and other electronics in another room.
- Journal your thoughts each morning until you feel like you have a clear mind.
- Write down daily goals you have for yourself and analyze them after one week. See any patterns?
- Analyze your spending habits month over month. Where are you spending the most money? This will reveal a lot about who you are and what you love to do the most.
- Spend time outside with Mother Nature.
- Write down five life goals each day and see if they change over the course of a month. Be as specific as you can. Hint – mine changed over time as I learned who I was really made to be. This was a great drill to establish a starting point and uncover more about myself over time.
